A. E. Fickert Saves The Day at The Berry Company

It was 4:30 p.m. on a typical beautiful August Sunday afternoon in Dayton when an asphalt tanker truck slammed into the side of one of the five-story buildings at The Berry Company campus on Kettering Blvd. A neighbor of The Berry Company was having their parking lot resealed when the parking break failed on one of the tanker trucks hauling the asphalt sealant. The truck began to roll away with no one inside and continued to roll down hill for about ¼ mile. Amazingly, it was not stopped by any trees, curbs or parking blocks in its way. It finally slammed into The Berry Company building and ended up almost entirely inside the first floor, taking out walls, cubes and everything in its path. Most significantly, it completely destroyed one of the structural support beams for the building. Since the structural support beam was destroyed, the fire department immediately condemned the building and shut off all power to the building.

As if having a tanker truck filled with asphalt sealant leaking in your building on Sunday evening is not bad enough, this building also housed the data center for The Berry Company. All data and computer systems were shut down with the electricity. The Berry Company had a potential disaster on their hands and had to accomplish what seemed to be an impossible task: make the building structurally sound so that the power could be allowed back into the building and the data center powered up before 8:00 a.m. Monday morning. Fortunately, they knew who to call in their time of need: A. E. Fickert.

A. E. Fickert was on the scene before 6:00 p.m. on Sunday and had crews cleaning the mess and repairing the damage. The most significant repair was to shore-up the damaged structural support beam. The A. E. Fickert team also had the challenge of working with materials and supplies that it had in its warehouse since it was late Sunday evening. The experts at A. E. Fickert quickly developed a plan and a method of repairing the damaged support beam; however, that was only part of the problem.

To allow the building to be reopened, the repair had to be approved by the City Engineer, an architect and the fire department, all late Sunday evening! The A. E. Fickert team, with extensive experience in emergency situations, coordinated these approvals late into the evening and received final approval from all authorities soon after midnight. The team continued to work until 1:30 a.m. when the building was finally re-opened. The Berry Company opened the workweek as usual on Monday morning, with all data systems working properly.
